Search Stark County Inmates

A Stark County inmate search starts at the county jail in Canton, where everyone booked by a local agency is processed. The jail is a busy 24-hour facility, and custody can change fast. To search for Stark County inmates, you usually need a full name and, when you have it, a date of birth. The county does not post a full web roster, so a phone call or the sheriff app is often the surest way to confirm who is in custody. State prison and federal inmates use different tools. Knowing booking, bond, visits, mail, and money rules helps families act fast and avoid wasted trips.

Stark County Jail Location and Phone

The Stark County Jail sits on the northeast side of Canton, not downtown with the courts. It is run by the Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Eric Weisburn. The jail is a 24-hour booking facility for every law enforcement agency in the county, with an operational capacity of 526 inmates. Two phone lines cover most family questions. The main line handles general jail matters. The Inmate Services line handles money, mail, and property questions.

Does Stark County Publish an Online Inmate Roster?

No public web-based roster was found on the Sheriff's official pages. The office points families to a mobile app and to phone contacts instead. That means the fastest way to confirm custody is to call the jail or check the sheriff app, not to search an outside website.

Skip the unofficial roster and mugshot sites. They can be wrong, out of date, or built to charge a fee for free public information. For a real answer about who is held in the Stark County Jail, go straight to the Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff app and a phone call work for a reason. Booking happens around the clock, so a person arrested overnight may not show anywhere until clerks finish the intake. The office also notes that its email is not monitored at all times, which makes the phone the faster route for a custody question. When you call, keep your details short and clear so the booking clerk can search quickly.

How to Verify Stark County Inmate Custody

Have the basics ready before you call. A full legal name is the minimum. A date of birth helps the booking clerk find the right person when names are common. Then work through the steps below.

  1. Call the jail at 330-430-3800 or open the sheriff mobile app.
  2. Give the full name and a date of birth if you have one.
  3. Ask for the booking number, booking date, bond, and the next court date.
  4. If staff cannot share a detail, ask which court or agency to contact next.
  5. For state prison custody, use the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction search.
  6. For federal custody, use the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.

The Stark County Jail Booking Process

Booking is more than a name entry. The official Jail Division page lays out each step. Staff get information from the arresting agency and the person, then enter it into the jail information management system. Officers fingerprint and photograph each inmate. They classify each one for violence, vulnerability, and housing. Property is inventoried and stored in a sealed package. A SecurPass Body Scanner and a search check for contraband. Then the inmate showers and gets jail clothing, a hygiene kit, bedding, and the jail rules.

The booking record is the start of the inmate file. You can read the official booking details on the Stark County Jail Division page.

What a Stark County Inmate Record Shows

The detail you see depends on what the Sheriff's Office publishes and what is withheld for safety. A jail record built from the booking file usually carries the fields below. Some items, like housing location, may be held back.

FieldWhat It Shows
Full NameThe inmate's legal name.
Booking NumberThe unique ID assigned at booking.
Booking Date and TimeWhen the person was booked in.
Custody StatusWhether the person is in custody or released.
ChargesThe offenses, with case or warrant numbers.
Arresting AgencyThe agency that made the arrest.
BondThe amount and type set for release.
Court DatesThe next scheduled hearing.
Housing LocationMay be withheld for safety.
Release DateShown only if release data is published.

Read these fields with care. A charge listed at booking is the arresting agency's charge, and a court may later change it, drop it, or add to it. Bond can be set, raised, lowered, or revoked at a hearing, so the figure at booking may not hold. Housing location is often withheld for safety, which is normal and not a sign that something is wrong. For the court side of a case, the booking record is only a starting point, and the docket carries the legal history.

Jail Capacity and Who Is Held There

The Stark County Jail has an operational capacity of 526 inmates. The official page reports 9,848 bookings in one 12-month period, from Nov. 1, 2017 through Nov. 1, 2018. That count split into 7,332 males and 2,516 females. The average stay based on bookings was 17 days. The jail received a Certificate of Compliance from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction on Nov. 16, 2018.

The jail holds a wide range of people. That runs from traffic-charge detainees to capital-case defendants. It includes people awaiting trial or sentencing, people awaiting transfer to state prison, fugitives awaiting return to other states, and people facing probation or parole revocation. It holds people committed by the three municipal courts, the Court of Common Pleas, and the Domestic Relations Court. For the data behind these numbers, see the jail population data page.

The Certificate of Compliance is worth understanding. It means the jail met the basic requirements of Ohio's jail minimum standards during a full-service annual inspection. That review covers safety, housing, and operations. It does not tell you who is in custody today, but it shows the facility is inspected against a state standard. For current custody, the booking clerk remains the source.

State and Federal Inmate Searches

The county jail is only one custody system. If a person was sent to state prison, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction offender search is the tool to use. It shows custody, release status, supervision, and the county of commitment, which includes Stark.

Stark County Inmate Phones, Money, and Commissary

Money rules at the jail changed over the past few years, so old advice can be wrong. Money by mail is no longer accepted. Money orders are no longer accepted by Inmate Services. The lobby kiosk takes cash and credit from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, including cash, MasterCard, and Visa. Online deposits go through two providers.

One option for online deposits is AccessCorrections. Its deposit portal is shown on the AccessCorrections site.

Sending Mail to a Stark County Inmate

Since June 1, 2021, the jail uses TextBehind. Physical mail is photocopied, and the service also offers electronic letters and photos. Electronic letters sent by 11:00 a.m. Monday through Friday may post the same day after approval. Physical mail goes to a Maryland processing address, not the jail.

Address physical mail to the offender's full first and last name and number, Stark County Jail, P.O. Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131. The envelope must include the sender's full name and return address plus the offender's full name and number. TextBehind does not accept legal mail, money orders, personal checks, gift cards, or cash.

Jail Programs and Medical Services

The jail runs programs beyond basic custody. Religious services include weekly chapel and Bible study, with materials on request. AA and NA meet weekly, with background checks for leaders; only court-ordered or non-violent classified inmates may join, and waitlists are common. The IARP program offers in-house chemical dependency counseling with case management and aftercare.

Medical and mental health care runs around the clock. The jail has 24-hour on-site nursing, weekday physician coverage with phone availability at other times, and a dentist once a week. The contract service also coordinates radiology, lab, and pharmacy needs. Inmate workers handle kitchen, laundry, cleaning, front-area, and litter-detail tasks; the official page lists 52 inmate workers, 48 male and 4 female, and estimates labor savings over $1 million a year.

One transit detail helps visitors and released inmates plan. The jail page notes that SARTA Bus #111, the Maple Bus, serves the jail Monday through Saturday from early morning until late evening. The downtown courthouse is a separate trip, so do not assume the jail bus route reaches the court buildings. Confirm any current route and time with SARTA before you rely on it.

Note: Posting bond does not always mean instant release, because the jail and court still need time to process the paperwork.
